# Activities

## Activity #1: Deductive-Reasoning Debate

**Step 1:** Using the rule and facts below, create two syllogisms—one reaching the conclusion that Jamie has violated the rule, and one reaching the conclusion that Jamie has not violated the rule.

* **Rule:** *Vehicles are not allowed in the park.*
* **Facts:** Jamie rides an electric scooter into the park.

**Step 2:** Now **expand** each syllogism into arguments you could present in a short debate. Your goal is to make your side sound obvious and compelling. Create arguments for *both* conclusions: (1) Jamie did violate the rule and (2) Jamie did not violate the rule.

## **Activity #2: Analogical-Reasoning Debate**

The city library has a rule: *“Food and drink that disrupt the library are not allowed.”* Taylor brings a smoothie into the library. The librarian says smoothies violate the rule against “food and drink that disrupts the library.”

You'll need to use analogical reasoning to decide whether the precedents support the librarian's claim that Taylor violated the rule.

* **Case A: *****City v. Vendor***\
 The library banned pizza delivery inside because hot food created strong odors that distracted other patrons.
* **Case B: *****City v. Snack Shack***\
 The library allowed vending machines with packaged snacks because they produced no smells and caused little disruption.

You will need to do the following:

**Step 1: Identify a proper base point for comparing the cases. (Remember to ask what the rule cares about and why. What features/factors matter the most?)**

**Step 2: Identify similarities and differences of all three cases using this base point. You'll need to determine whether a smoothie is more like a pizza or more like a vending machine snack.**

**Step 3: Draft two analogical arguments that make cases for both sides. Explain which differences matter and which do not.**
